Week 15 – CSA Newsletter

Summer 2024

Hi everyone!

Happy super harvest blood moon with a partial eclipse!!! Hope you all took a peek at the amazing moonrise tonight.

I hope everyone enjoyed the CSA last week. Everything is beginning to feel more and more like fall. Right now, we’re enjoying the merge of summer and fall veggies, all in one box! Tomatoes are still around, but the winter squash and potatoes are starting to take over. This week everyone will receive some arugula, which I am super excited about. I can only grow it in the late fall because one of our pesky-ist of pests, the flea beetle, really like to eat arugula. They seem to die away in September, so I can get away with planting lots of fall arugula!

I am hoping to see some of you at the CSA Member party this weekend. We will be enjoying food together, taking a little tour of the farm, and picking raspberries! We rent a little patch of raspberries at Big River Farms, and they are exploding off the plants, we need help picking and eating them! We will do a U-pick style, so bring your own container and a little cash and we will weigh what you pick for pricing at the end. It’s optional, so no worries if you don’t want to pick raspberries.

Also, our final CSA member volunteer day is this Thursday from 2-6pm. We’ll most likely be weeding, or picking some fall veggies. Please wear closed toe shoes, long pants, a hat, and bring water/snacks. You can text me when you’re coming so I can share the gate code. The farm address is listed on the invitation to the farm party below:

Milo joined me for a few days on the farm last week. A lot of people ask me, what does a baby do all day on the farm? Here is how Milo enjoyed his days in the field last week:

Some Inspiration…

This week, everyone received a spaghetti squash. This winter squash is an awesome replacement for pasta. You can slice in half lengthwise and roast in the oven. Once it is soft, you can scrape out the flesh and top with your favorite pasta sauce. Here is a solid recipe for spaghetti squash with sausage and kale: Spaghetti Squash with Sausage & Kale – Dishing Up the Dirt but honestly her website has lots of spaghetti squash recipe ideas.

This week, my favorite kitchen creation was a roasted sweet pepper and sweet potato soup. I topped it with feta and sunflower sprouts and ate it with crusty sourdough. If all the stars align, I’m hoping to share it with you on Sunday at the member party!

Here’s a recipe to follow! You can definitely use any of the sweet peppers in your box in this recipe, no need to have red bell peppers.

I also got busy in the kitchen and turned one of those 10lbs cabbages into sauerkraut! If you’re still sitting on some cabbage from the season, I recommend a little raut making!

Also, I wanted to share another recipe for shishito peppers that was shared with me by a CSA member! Hope this gives you some more inspiration to use up those tasty shishito peppers. You can always pop back into the week 13 newsletter for more shishito pepper ideas.

Soil and sunshine,

Eleanor
